Three Sisters Underground Conversion

At the Three Sisters Mountain Village Resort in Canada's Rocky Mountains, we converted two overhead transmission lines to underground high-voltage cable encased in concrete duct banks. Construction challenges included abandoned shallow mineshafts, sinkholes and special wildlife precautions. Client: Three Sisters Mountain Village

AltaLink 500 kV Upgrades

We are providing front-end services and EPC delivery for AltaLink's 500 kV upgrades in the province of Alberta. Three substations have been upgraded to 500 kV voltage, and options are under review for the 350 km transmission line between Edmonton and Calgary.Client: AltaLink LP

Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection

Our Owner's Engineer contract included the planning and studies, tender documentation, engineering and design, and supervision of six Turnkey EPC contracts on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority. Studies included a feasibility study, techno-economic analysis, financial analysis, generation and transmission expansion planning, and market studies. This 400 kV Interconnection Project involved 800 km of new double circuit transmission lines, a submarine cable system, six new GIS substations, and an HVDC back-to-back converter station linking 50 Hz and 60 Hz grids. Also included was the integration of protection, control, telecommunication and SCADA systems into various facilities and a new interconnection control center. Countries within this interconnection mandate are Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and UAE.

Turnkey Greenfield Substations

Turnkey EPC delivery of five greenfield substations in the province of British Columbia. Substations include voltages from 60/25 kV to 230/25 kV in locations near Whistler, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Fort St. John, and Abbotsford. 240 kV Pole Replacement

240 kV transmission towers were relocated to accommodate road widening in the city of Calgary. Very limited outages were available, so much of the replacement work was conducted under "hot" conditions with cranes holding energized lines away from the tower installation site. A unique laminated pole was designed to minimize the tower footprint; at the time of its construction it was the tallest of its kind in North America.

Cordel Hansman Transmission Line and Substation

Engineering, procurement, and construction of 103 kilometres of new 240 kV transmission line, a new 240/25 kV substation, and a rebuilt 240/25 kV substation in Alberta. Sensitive environmental conditions required winter construction and a challenging schedule that minimized outages on local communities and industries.

Nalcor Energy: Lower Churchill Project, Integration of the 900MW, ±350 kV HVDC Scheme

SNC-Lavalin's EPCM mandate with Nalcor Energy includes the Muskrat Falls Hydroelectric Development and the ±350 kV HVDC interconnection between Newfoundland and Labrador. Planning and studies services includes load flow, short circuit, transient stability, harmonic impedance, reactive power compensation, insulation coordination, identification of network reinforcements and selection of HVDC technology. The scope includes 1,100 km of ±350 kV HVDC bipolar OHTL (Excluding the 30 km of underwater cables), as well as 260 km of 315 kV HVAC OHTL. Substation services include ±350 kV and 900 MW converter stations, a 735-315 kV AIS substation extension, and a 315-138 kV substation.
